Balancing
Economic Development &
Environmental Protection
On February 23, 2008, over 140 students from
15 high schools on Oahu attended PAAC’s
annual Global Vision Summit at Hawaii Tokai
International Conference. This year’s
topic, “Economic Development and Environmental
Protection,” engaged students on a personal
and international level. The day began as students
shopped for life’s necessities at the
“Global Mall” with a limited budget
in an activity that helped students evaluate
the link between one’s economic situation
and lifestyle choices, as well as the social
and environmental impact of those choices.
Students
later explored the challenges of balancing economic
needs with environmental protection in a simulation
reminiscent of January’s “Major
Economies Meeting on Energy Security and Climate
Change” conference at the East-West Center.
They represented twelve countries including
Japan, the Marshall Islands, Ukraine, China,
and Vietnam, as they negotiated an international
agreement to reduce carbon emissions over the
next ten years.

Following
the simulation, students made personal commitments
to reduce their environmental impact through
Kanu Hawaii, a local group of people dedicated
to promoting environmental awareness and action.
They rounded out the day with a career exploration
component by meeting professionals who work
in fields such as resource management, environmental
law, and sustainable development. These individuals
provided insight into their professional field
and shared their personal stories of success.
Quotes
from Students:
“The
individual is important. Making a change in
the world starts with me.”
“I
learned how hard it is for the international
community to come together and work toward solving
environmental issues.”
