NATIONAL WORLDQUEST
COMPETITION REPORT
In Washington, DC the Mid-Pacific Institute
team placed 16th out of 44 teams in the nation.
The National Academic WorldQuest Competition was
held on March 24, 2007, during a weekend of activities
including a chance to meet students from across
the country and to explore the city’s monuments
and museums.
The students commented:
“We got to go to many Smithsonian museums
and spend time walking through DC… This
was a hands-on learning experience that complemented
what we learned in WorldQuest; it put the events
we were now experts on in perspective. I’ve
gained a respect not only for history, but the
present, (and) with that respect, my interest
in events has increased tenfold.”
“This year, I… felt surprised by
the amount of knowledge and insight that I have
gained over the past three years participating
in Worldquest. I remember sophomore year when
we began exploring current events and people in
the news in preparation, I began learning the
different issues facing our nation and the world.
The second year I participated, I not only knew
about the issues, but I understood the issues.
This year, I found that I have progressed even
further--I am now formulating my own informed
and legitimate opinions. As we watched C-SPAN
in our hotel room and discussed issues with other
students, I found myself so comfortable with the
issues, that I voiced my opinion. I feel more
knowledgeable and confident as a citizen and a
voter because of my participation in Worldquest.”

Mid-Pacific Institute Wins
PAAC’s 7th Annual Chevron Academic WorldQuest
Competition!
For the third year in a row, Mid-Pacific Institute
will represent Hawaii in the National Academic
WorldQuest Competition, sponsored by the World
Affairs Councils of America, in Washington, DC.
The local competition was held on Saturday, January
20, 2007, at Imin Conference Center on Oahu and
Seabury Hall on Maui. Punahou took second place,
and Education Lab School and another team from
Mid-Pacific Institute tied for third.
Excitement was in the air as 45
teams from 14 schools answered challenging questions
on current events, Southeast Asian countries, the
Arab-Israeli conflict, geography of Africa, international
humanitarian relief organizations, and people in
the news. Students’ scores were impressive,
and the competition was close- six teams were within
4 points of the third place teams.
Outstanding combined effort demonstrated by the
2nd and 3rd place teams!
