High School Spring Global Vision Summit
Chaminade University
March 7, 2009
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

On March 7, 2009, 160 students from 17 schools met at Chaminade University to explore “Our Energy Future.” The day began with remarks from keynote speaker Dr. Kang Wu, energy expert and East-West Center fellow, and career exploration sessions by professionals in the energy field. After these meetings, the students began a simulation of the meeting with the Mayor to discuss the fate of the controversial wind farm. In this exercise, students took on the roles and interests of six stakeholders in the issue, discovering and working with their opposing viewpoints and interests to come up with a solution. In doing so, they wrestled with the benefits and realities of transitioning to renewable energy sources, while taking leadership in their small groups and developing an appreciation for multiple perspectives.

A student mentioned that they liked how the career exploration tied in energy to other, non-environmental fields such as business, technology, and law.

After lengthy discussion and compromise between stakeholders, a compromise has been reached that will allow the Breeze Company to resume operation next month on Maui. The company’s ten wind turbines were temporarily shut down after it was discovered that they were killing a rare type of migratory bird. Representatives from the Breeze Company, the Sierra Club, and Citizens Against Breeze, the property owner, and other residents, came together to negotiate a solution to the situation. While the majority was in support of incorporating alternate energy into the community, there was disagreement regarding the noise and look of the turbines, the importance of saving the birds, and the role of Breeze Company in bettering the community.

One student participant said, "I learned that negotiations involving community factors require compromise. Not everyone will receive their goal."
