The
International Visitor Leadership Program of the
United States State Department brings foreign leaders
to the United States to meet directly with their
American counterparts. These current and emerging
leaders from overseas travel to communities throughout
the United States for face-to-face meetings with
their professional colleagues. The exchange enables
the foreign leaders to obtain firsthand knowledge
about the United States, its people, policies and
culture. Lasting business, cultural and educational
contacts with prominent professionals overseas often
develops.
The
foreign visitors are identified and selected by
U.S. embassies in over 120 countries around the
world. As a member of the National Council of International
Visitors, PAAC acts as the liaison between the community
in Hawai'i and the visitors who come to our state.
Home
Hospitality
A
major component of the the IVLP program is home
hospitality. It is the essence of citizen diplomacy
and is one of the most enriching experiences for
the visitor and host. Hosting provides an opportunity
to learn about other cultures and meet fascinating
personalities. Many business and professional linkages
and life-long friendships have been formed as a
result of home hospitality.
Home
hospitality can be as informal or as formal as you
want it to be: dinner at your home or out, an outing
or a potluck with your friends, picnic at a park,
driving around, etc. Involvement could be once or
twice a year.
