Students embark on adventure to Vietnam By Alexandra Charles 6/19/2007 11:02:01 AM Twenty
Hawaiian high school students, including Molokai's very own Joseph
Masui and Ka'ohele Ritte-Camara, are on a two-week all-expense paid
trip to Vietnam as part of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council's
(PAAC) Summer Study Tour.
This past week, in preparation for
the trip, the students took part in a weeklong orientation in Oahu to
learn about Vietnam's history, language and culture.
While
visiting Vietnam, students will explore the sights in the former
capital, Hue, wander the streets of Hoi An and experience daily life in
the Mekong Delta.
They will tour Hanoi's French Old Quarter
with local guides, attend a Water Puppet theater performance, visit
schools in different parts of the country and sample the local cuisine.
The
students were awarded travel scholarships based on their academic
achievement, financial need, character, and interest in international
affairs and Vietnam.
Funding comes from the Freeman
Foundation, which seeks to encourage understanding between Asian and
Pacific countries and the United States.
PAAC, a non-profit
organization, promotes education in international affairs, particularly
Asia-Pacific issues and conducts global education outreach programs at
Hawaiian high schools and community colleges.
The PAAC travel
program began in 2004 and the destinations since then have been China,
South Korea and Japan. Travel itineraries are designed so students can
encounter many aspects of an Asian-Pacific country including its
history, culture and way of life.
PAAC Public Relations Officer
Tandy Awaya said students who participated in the program in past years
return from the trip inspired to travel to other places in the world
and sometimes enter international related studies.
One student
who traveled with PAAC to Japan last year wrote in a trip report: "Even
though at times it was hard to communicate, it was still fun to try."
Another excerpt read: "It's really fun to compare your life with
someone living so far away. Some things are still the same …"
Next
year, PAAC will send scholarship students to China. To learn more about
