The Human Rights Academy is dedicated to informing students about efforts to realize human rights, justice, dignity, equality, and equity in Hawai'i and around the world. Work with the Director of the Hawai’i Institute for Human Rights, Joshua Cooper, to develop a plan of action for your community. All lectures will be held in-person or in hybrid form, and there will be in-person opportunities outside of the scheduled time to convene or attend additional aligned events.

Scheduled sessions will cover:

  1. Mechanisms in place at the United Nations, such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and Human Rights Council, to assess the progress of humanity in achieving the 2030 Agenda (Sustainable Development Goals) and Global Human Rights.

  2. The UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)

  3. The Paris Agreement (which strives to limit global temperature rise to 1.5º Celsius), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and Hawai’i’s Locally Determined contributions.

  4. Hawai'i’s ongoing Voluntary Local Review (VLR), Aloha+ Challenge, and Voluntary University Review (VUR) are three initiatives that seek to achieve the Global Goals through a human rights-based approach at the grassroots level.

Students will:

  1. Contribute their insights to have an impact on our islands in the international arena.
  2. Discuss with classmates and community members to create stakeholder reports to contribute to the global dialogue.
  3. Follow the UN's various procedures in human rights, sustainable development, and climate justice to trace their contributions from Hawaiʻi.

This advanced seminar is created for a range of learners:

  • Students from high school level to undergraduate level
  • Teachers, this is an excellent opportunity to co-learn with students and renew your knowledge base on the pressing issues in world affairs
