Join PAAC and the East-West Center Arts Program for an interactive teacher workshop for K-12 teachers. Participants will learn about various forms of traditional music from Asia and the Pacific, experience hands-on workshops, discover strategies to incorporate this topic in the classroom, and gain access to resources in the community.
Friday, April 3, 5:30- 8:30 PM &
Saturday, April 4, 8:30 AM- 5:30 PM
East-West Center, John A. Burns Hall
This teacher workshop focuses on musical traditions of the Asia Pacific region and is offered in conjunction with the EWC Gallery exhibition featuring Asia Pacific musical instruments from the Ethnomusicology Instrument Collection at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Music Department. The collection has been acquired over the past 70 years and is an invaluable resource for the community because the instruments are meant to be utilized rather than to be displayed as museum pieces. Many of the instruments in the collection are used in the various musical ensembles at the university. This exhibition also features costumes, masks, photographs, and video to assist in understanding the fuller cultural context of the instruments.
This teacher workshop offers presentations by local practitioners who are professional artists in the musical traditions presented as part of the exhibition. Download the flyer for more information on the presenters.
There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee. The workshop will include pupus on Friday and breakfast, snacks, lunch, and catered dinner on Saturday.
