Students Clean Waimanalo Bay at PAAC Global Action Project

November 17, 2018

Over 80 students from PAAC’s after-school classes and clubs cleaned up trash and sifted through sand for microplastics at Waimanalo Bay on Saturday, November 17th. 10 schools representing all sides of the island- from Nanakuli to Kailua- were present. Even a few PAAC alumni joined in for PAAC’s 2018 Global Action Project.  This Global Action Project was provided in collaboration with Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i.

Before students got to work, Rebecca Mattos of Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i spoke about the global migration of plastics, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and how they impact Hawai‘i.

Many students were shocked to see how long it took to clear the microplastics from just a small area of sand.
