Spring 2023 K-12 Teacher Workshop

Friday-Saturday, March 24-25, 2023

REGISTER HERE BY FEBRUARY 24, 2023

This K-12 teacher workshop is organized by the East-West Center Arts Program and the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council (PAAC).  It is being held in conjunction with the East-West Center Art Gallery exhibition entitled, “In the Folds” which runs from February 5 – April 16, 2023.

The exhibition, in collaboration with TEMARI Hawaiʻi, features Asia and the Pacific folding traditions and contemporary expressions. The traditional works will be displayed in juxtaposition with works by featured contemporary Hawai‘i-based artists including Arisa Terlaje Barcinas, Vilsoni Hereniko, Kamalu du Preez, Lynn Graton Martin, Marques Hanalei Marzan, Marcia Morse, and Sara Oka.

Our workshop, “How to Fold 5 Ways” will focus on expanding our understanding the role of folding in paper, clothing, local contemporary art, wrapping and food. As in all our teacher workshops, we will also focus on extensions to the classrooms.

Our presenters/artists are excited to share their interpretations of folding and how it is central to all of our lives. Included will be: Jose Barzola of the Matsunaga Peace Institute sharing a current project, Sadako Peace Crane Project; Meleana Meyer motivating student writing by creating their own handmade books; and more.

Funding for round-trip airfare and one night of lodging at the East-West Center is available for a limited number of teachers from neighbor islands.

REGISTRATION FEE: $15
