Global Leadership Program in its Second Year!

October 13, 2016

Perched on Kamehame Ridge in Hawaii Kai, Winners’ Camp provided a scenic backdrop to kick-off the Global Leadership Program’s leadership retreat in October. Between sunrise hikes and ropes courses, this year’s cohort of 19 young leaders participated in rigorous workshops that stretched their minds and challenged them to broaden their worldview. Workshop topics addressed global citizenship, vulnerability, active listening, non-violent communication, power and privilege, and resilience and self-empowerment.

“Camp was a life changing experience. Amazing how in 4 days I can totally change as a person. I am now more open and can better understand others’ perspectives and am much more knowledgeable about the world.”

Mahalo to the many guest speakers who enhanced the leadership retreat with their expertise. Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Director of Community Outreach and Service Learning at the Matsunaga Institute for Peace, discussed the difference between positive and negative peace and inspired students with anecdotes of peace leadership in action.

Internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller, Kealoha, sparked students creativity through writing and performance workshops.

Joshua Cooper, Executive Director of the Hawaii Institute for Human Rights, discussed the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and captivated students with his world travels.

The cohort continues to meet monthly for leadership development workshops on themes such as urban planning, civic engagement, and sustainable business practices.
